This is another good source of revenue for the church (it’s not a lot, but every bit helps).
All paper except telephone books and cardboard is welcome.
Drop off newspapers, magazines, old mail, office paper, etc. This is a year-round
effort to help the environment while helping to lower operating costs.

grand annual collection - October 2008
July and August, the dog days of summer, will hopefully be a time of rest/vacation for all of you.  Each has just x amount of energy that must be renewed or regenerated during these summer months.  Be sure to rest – especially now that we have robbed ourselves of the Sabbath day of rest (Sunday) by reducing that to just another day of buying and selling.  I believe that what we may have gained in shopping convenience, we and our families have lost culturally by becoming an even more frantically paced people.  Ah, so much for my thoughts.

The new lights – which took months to make out in St. Louis – have finally been installed.  Where once we used 6000 watts of energy to illuminate the church, we now use only 1020.  We will monitor the savings.  I also hope you have driven by the church in the early evening and seen that the façade of the church is now lit up by a light hidden behind the stature of St. Jude.  We’re now a beacon in the darkness.

But then there’s always something more to be done.

The three staircases into the church (excluding the front staircase) have deteriorated over the 40 year history of the building.  No surprise in that; 40 years will deteriorate every one of us, let alone stair cases.  Still it appeared somewhat unexpectedly.  They demand our immediate attention because another winter will do even more damage to them.  They are being worked on as I write this message.

No, this is not a begging-letter.  But because it was unexpected, this expense was not put into the parish budget for the fiscal year ’08 – ’09.  My plan is to make this expense the focal point of the Grand Annual Collection which is taken up in October.

Enjoy the summer.  It goes faster every year as one gets older.

We Have A Deacon!

Welcome Our New Deacon:  Deacon David Ghioni As announced last weekend, Cardinal Sean O’Malley has assigned the newly ordained, Rev. Mr. David Ghioni, to our parish as deacon.  But many are unfamiliar with what a deacon is and what he does.

You recall from your catechism or religious education that one of the seven sacraments is called Holy Orders.  Note the plural use of the word “orders” – more than one!

Holy Orders is the sacrament which calls men from among Christ’s disciples to serve other disciples in the Church in a threefold manner: as deacons, priests, and bishops.  One can be ordained a “deacon” and remain in that ministry in a permanent manner like Deacon David Ghioni.  Every priest must be first ordained a deacon before he is later ordained a priest.  Every bishop must be ordained a deacon and priest before he is finally ordained a bishop.

Permanent deacons are called to serve the Church in a distinctive, particular manner.  They are ordained to preach, teach, baptize and witness marriages – as well as assume certain pastoral responsibilities with Fr. Rivard and me.  These responsibilities are now being delineated so that these new parish duties do not interfere with Deacon David’s primary vocation as husband and father of three.

If you have ever assumed a new job or even a different job, you know that one approaches it with a certain amount of trepidation and hesitation.  I remember my first year as a priest – and it was full of moments in which I asked: “Did I do it right?”  Deacon David will be going through the same questions.  Encourage him. Compliment him. And give him the same warm welcome you have given Fr. Rivard and me. Posted 060808

THANK YOU FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK
“Always and everywhere give thanks to the Lord, our God!”
The financial stability of a parish is entrusted to the pastor – but with the competent guidance of a Finance Committee.  John Burke has served in that responsible capacity from the days of my predecessor, Father Connor, until our most recent meeting of the Finance Council this past week.  Because of a need for rotation, John has stepped down, but has promised us that he would be available for any financial advice that we may need to assure fiscal stability.
So, thank you, John!  You have been one of those quiet, unacknowledged blessings to this parish
